Joensuu, 5 April 2016Environment Online - ENO made a commitment of planting 100 million trees by 2017 in Rio+20 Summit. This pledge was highlighted in the overall summary by Rio Secretariat. According BBC, it was "the most dynamic-sounding pledge on the register".
100 Million Trees by 2017 will come true!
Today it seems that the target will be achieved, with the help of ENO Green Cities and governments. Belarus joined recently to support 100 million trees campaign. They will help young people to plant 9 million trees in 2016. ENO schools have planted 20 million trees. Together with the commitments of 10 countries, the overall number of trees has reached the target. It is now 103 million trees.
"We are reaching the target, a number that sounded very challenging for a voluntary grassroots network", says Mika Vanhanen, executive manager. "I want to congratulate already all of those who have made their contribution. More important than the number of trees is the process itself: to involve young generation to plant trees together despite borders, religions or political situation. Trees are also planted for peace - with this deed we send a message of hope to more sustainable world."
